HIPAA and Security Threats

Every day, the news presents another data breach of some kind; the latest report concerned Anthem Blue Cross. The HIPAA guidelines present strategies to protect Patient Health information from data breaches and “prying eyes”. The best method of compliance is scheduled, regular review of your computer systems. Use these reviews to test the security of your system and ensure that, in the event of disaster, your practice could recover quickly and be operational without major loss of data & integrity.

Disclosure of Financial Relationships

The Social Security Act requires CMS to collect information from manufacturers and group purchasing organizations to report information about their financial relationships with physicians and hospitals. These financial relationships can include money for speaking fees, meals, travel, research activities or gifts. The Open Payments system (commonly known as the Physician Payments Sunshine Act) is the federal program that collects this information and makes it available to the public. Registration is required at http://www.cms.gov/openpayments. If you or your practice have any financial relationships, be sure to register and avoid any problems..

CONSTANTLY Changing Horizons

It seems like every other day mailings arrive from the insurers to announce changes in their product offerings, designated lab vendors and the like. It is virtually impossible to keep up with all of the changes. In order to manage this, be sure to prioritize by volume of patients, the insurers that you see the most. Ensure that your front office staff is well aware of the requirements for these high-volume insurers. That way, when a patient presents with insurance coverage from one of the other insurers, your staff can contact that insurer for the most up-to-date coverage, eligibility and procedural information.
