Medicare DME Changes and More

DME FEES

The application fee for Medicare Durable Medical Equipment (DME) was raised from $542 to $553. The fees are payable online with a credit card. The same fees are also changed for revalidation and reactivation. AddVal prepares the enrollment or revalidation forms as usual with instructions on paying the fee online. If you choose, you can return the application to us with a check payable to AddVal for the application fees and we will process the payment on your behalf.

DME FINGERPRINTING

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is beginning to implement fingerprint-based background checks. The fingerprint-based background check will be completed on all individuals with a 5 percent or greater ownership interest in a provider or supplier that falls under the high risk category. More details are available at http://www.cms.gov/Regulations -and-Guidance/Guidance/Manuals/Downloads/pim83c15.pdf on the CMS website.

HIRING PHYSICIAN EXTENDERS?

Many practices are hiring Nurse Practitioners and/ or Physician Assistants for their practices. Credentialing for these allied health practitioners is very different than the credentialing for physicians. One of the main differences is the requirement of a Collaborating Agreement between the physician and the physician extender. The Collaborating Agreement specifies and defines the parameters of the work to be done independently, under direct supervision and under indirect supervision. The physician extender’s professional organization can assist with a template for you to use specific for your practice. Additional resources can be found on the Internet; many templates are available with a simple Google search.

Credentialing cannot begin without a signed Collaborating Agreement between the physician and the physician extender. Also, be sure to review your State’s specific requirements regarding supervision and licensing – the requirements vary considerably from State to State. For example, Pennsylvania requires a supervising physician license for each physician supervising a physician assistant.
