Rumors about Billing / Pay To / Remittance Addresses

With the implementation of the 5010 transaction standards, multiple rumors and misconceptions have been born. One of these misconceptions involves the use of a post office box as a practice's billing address.

With the 5010 transaction standards, the Billing Address (Loop 2010AA – N301 or N302) can not be a post office box or lock box. The Billing Address must be the street address listed with the practice's National Provider Identifier (NPI). However, this does not mean that the practice cannot use a post office box or lock box to receive payments. If you are using a post office box or lock box for payments, that data must be submitted as the Pay-to (remittance) Address (Loop 2010AB – Pay-To Address Name).

It is critical that the data elements are listed correctly for all claims submissions to avoid delays in payments or missed payments. If there is any confusion or cause for concern, it is worthwhile to update all insurers with your practice's correct address(es), Billing Address and Pay-To/ Remittance Address.

If you are confused or concerned about the implementation of the 5010 standards, please consult your clearinghouse vendor. If you need assistance with the credentialing filings for any of the insurers to ensure that your practice information is correct, please contact AddVal for assistance
